For San Fermin frontman and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone, their third studio album Belong is a major game-changer. “In the past I’d usually write through characters from books or movies, as a way to try to distance myself from what I was writing about,” says the Brooklyn-based artist. “As I’ve become more confident as a songwriter, I decided that I could drop some of the artifice and write something more direct.” Produced by Ludwig-Leone, and with his fellow performers completing the picture, the album’s hypnotic sound unfolds in smooth textures that bring both elegance and raw passion to the recording.
After performing together hundreds of times, San Fermin’s chemistry and evolution shines through in their latest album. After all this time together, Ludwig-Leone says he finally truly understands his group, and the direction they want to move in together. “It’s amazing to me that this thing I started by myself now has a shared consciousness and a life of its own,” he says. For Ludwig-Leone hopefully this life of its own is a long one, and if Belong is any indication of what’s to come, you can rest assured that it will be.
