Los Angeles-based matching vintage formalwear-sporting foursome, Chicano Batman, cut their teeth making Brazilian Tropicália blended with early ’70s psychedelic soul and romantic pop, and their reputation grew exponentially. The band will make their boldest statement yet with the release of their third album, Freedom Is Free, out March 3rd via ATO Records.
While I questioned whether I was cool enough to even listen to the first single, “Friendship (Is a Small Boat In A Storm),” I couldn’t have stopped myself had I tried. This sizzler is an organ-driven soul jam where buzzing psychedelic guitar abounds, and features New York’s all-female Mariachi Flor de Toloache on backing vocals. “This is a song of betrayal in the most mundane sense,” says frontman Bardo Martinez. “It’s about the trials and tribulations of friendship and also a personal reflection on the painful realities of human relationships,” he continues of the single, which is illustrated in its accompanying video, directed by Alan Del Río Ortiz (Solange, Major Lazer, St. Vincent, Blood Orange).
Feast your eyes upon and treat your ears to “Friendship (Is A Small Boat In A Storm)” by Chicano Batman–be forewarned, it’s funky as hell:
