Naarm/Melbourne band Max Aurora & The Southern Lights return with “How I Know It’s Right,” a track that leans into the tension between clarity and chaos that follows a breakup.
Led by intersex, non-binary songwriter Max Aurora, the project wraps narrative-driven songwriting inside pop-punk and emo influenced indie rock. That approach continues on “How I Know It’s Right.” The song focuses less on the breakup itself and more on what comes after. The shift in perspective and the search for something steadier.
Produced by Jono O’Toole of Cry Club, the track opens with a tight, driving rhythm before settling into a push-and-pull between restraint and release. Guitarist Jack Eden leans into a heavier, overdriven tone, while the rhythm section keeps things controlled underneath, giving the music a sense of forward motion that matches the lyrical pull.
Aurora describes the song as a quick, instinctive write:
“Written in a single night, ‘How I Know It’s Right’ explores the quiet relief of leaving a fractured relationship and the curiosity of what a wholesome love could feel like. It explores the urgent, wide-eyed wonder of what a truly wholesome connection feels like, and the restless patience in searching for it.”
“How I Know It’s Right” brings some quick-moving, indie energy to our Spotify playlist.
