On “Used,” Nashville indie rock four-piece shan the band lean into a slow-burning build. Songwriter and guitarist Shannon Garrett anchors the arrangement, while the band’s sound is further shaped by an electric, effects-driven harmonica.
The vocals begin wistful before gradually giving way to simmering angst. The guitar follows a similar path, moving from melodic restraint toward something more insistent as the song unfolds. The track builds patiently. Small flourishes are layered before it shifts in intensity, giving way to an extended rock jam.
What stands out about Danny Garrett’s use of the harmonica is how it often doesn’t feel like a harmonica at all. On first listen, we didn’t even realize it was a harmonica. Instead, we heard something closer to distorted strings or a saxophone weaving through the mix.
Lyrically, “Used” reflects on emotional burnout and the realization that some things are unchangeable. That reflective pathway fits well with the track’s overall indie rock arc.
That reflective approach carries through to the song’s structure. With “Used” serving as only their second release to date, shan the band show a willingness to let songs develop at their own pace rather than rush to a payoff.
