LAUREN MAYBERRY AT THE MIL – REVIEW AND PHOTOS

Just a few months after releasing her debut solo album, Vicious Creature, Lauren Mayberry brought her headlining tour under to Nashville. The show, held at The Mil at Cannery Hall, marked a major creative shift for the CHVRCHES frontperson—one where introspection, restraint, and lyrical vulnerability took the spotlight over synth-heavy spectacle.

Opening with an extended version of “Crocodile Tears,” Mayberry set the stage with the kind of emotional tension that would define the night. Her band was a traditional setup—two guitarists, drums, and keys. Together, they added just enough texture to support her voice without overpowering the material. Tracks like “Change Shapes” and “Shame” stayed faithful to their recorded versions, while others, like “Punch Drunk” and “Something in the Air,” were reimagined with longer intros or adjusted pacing that gave them new life in a live setting.

Midway through the set, Mayberry shifted gears with a stripped-down performance of “Are You Awake?”—the delicate piano ballad that introduced her solo era. Positioned between the new material and an emotive cover of The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” the moment felt both intimate and pivotal.

Nashville audiences can be slow to warm, and on this night, the energy was stoic but attentive—respectful silence during songs, and roaring applause between them. However, the aforementioned cover landed well with the crowd, almost like a tension release, and by the time the band moved into “A Work of Fiction,” the room had finally loosened up.

The encore opened with Mayberry’s raw and personal, “Oh, Mother.” Her delivery was as emotionally weighty as it was understated. She closed with “Sunday Best,” allowing the crowd to part ways with an upbeat tempo and hopeful energy as its lasting memory.

While the show avoided CHVRCHES material entirely, Mayberry’s presence—poised but unguarded—was more than enough to hold the room. This wasn’t a nostalgia act or a side project. It also wouldn’t be fair to say Mayberry was “redefining” herself because the works she shared were clearly personal. Rather, the crowd at The Mil in Nashville witnessed an artist finally getting a chance to share herself, and just herself, without the idea of “the good of the group” as a filter.
