BONNAROO 2024 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: CHAPPELL ROAN

The 2024 edition of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is approaching quickly. Taking place June 13-16 in Manchester, Tennessee, Bonnaroo will feature a ton of amazing music. To help you sort through such a massive lineup, East of 8^th is starting a spotlight series featuring a few acts that we know will appeal to our readers’ fine musical tastes.

Let’s kick this series off with the Midwest’s rising pop star, Chappell Roan. Roan has quickly—perhaps meteorically—made a name for herself in both pop music and pop culture. Such success is highlighted by recent live performances at NPR’s Tiny Desk, MTV PUSH,and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. She also recently finished a run of tour stops supporting superstar Olivia Rodrigo on her GUTS World Tour.

Roan’s expanding influence in the pop music scene started through a series of singles and viral performances. However, last fall we saw the release of Roan’s debut album, The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess. Her musical stylings include dance ready pop on her biggest hit, “Red Wine Supernova,” synth-pop on “Pink Pony Club,” and cinematic soundscapes on “Casual.” While her music draws from a range of influences, her lyrical themes always stay true to her desire to raise awareness about the things that matter most to her: self-expression, human rights, social responsibility, and gender inclusion.

Her catalogue of music continues to grow in 2024 as her latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” dropped onto all streaming services. The track features Roan’s strong, emotive vocals as she sings about the end of a relationship and the contemplation it brings about exploring authentic love and self-acceptance. About the song, Roan shares, “I needed to write a song about a common situationship within queer relationships — where someone is struggling with coming to terms with themselves. It’s a song about wishing well to someone who is avoidant of their true feelings”.
