Louisville, Kentucky jamming rockers My Morning Jacket is set to be part of the late-night experience at the 2023 edition of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.
In anticipation of their return to The Farm, MMJ has announced the upcoming release of a new live album: MMJ Live Vol. 3 Bonnaroo 2004 (Return to Thunderdome). The first track from the album is now available everywhere (link below).
About My Morning Jacket:
Although often thought of as a “jam band,” My Morning Jacket is more of an indie rock band that’s simply not afraid to lean into a good jam session. Known for their live shows that never disappoint, MMJ is led by singer/guitarist Jim James, who has a stage presence you won’t forget. While the band’s fans can spend hours debating the best place for newbies to get a first taste of their works, we recommend a career-spanning journey starting with 2001’s At Dawn, hitting up 2008’s Evil Urges, and soaking in the explorative Circuital from 2011. There are, of course, plenty of good songs before, in between, and after these albums, but we’re just giving you a jumping off point.
About the 2023 Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival:
The 2023 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is set to take place this June 15 through 18. The festival is known for its genre-spanning lineups of both major touring acts and rising artists. This year’s festival features the Foo Fighters, Kendrick Lamar, and ODESZA as well many other acts that we can’t wait to see including Diarrhea Planet, Morgan Wade, Danielle Ponder, girl in red, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Jenny Lewis, and of course, My Morning Jacket! Bonnaroo stands out as one of the best weekends of the year because it truly is a full weekend of music. Once bands start playing, there’s always something to do from the famous sunrise sets to the legendary late-night fun. You can get more information about Bonnaroo 2023 tickets here.
Why MMJ Playing Bonnaroo Is So Special:
Anyone who has been to Bonnaroo, perused the Bonnaroo subreddit, or stalked the long-running discussion board Inforoo knows that My Morning Jacket has a strong connection to The Farm. While the 2004 set featured on MMJ Live Vol. 3 Bonnaroo 2004 (Return to Thunderdome) was a legendary show, many of us got our first real taste of MMJ when they ruled the late-night lineup of 2008. Their 2008 performance is often cited as either the favorite show of many Bonnaroovians…or the biggest regret many have for missing it. While the band did make a stop at the festival in 2011 for a far too quick set, the Bonnaroo faithful are hyped about the band’s return to the late night schedule for 2023. After all, late night is when the real magic of The Farm often happens. However, if you can’t make Bonnaroo fit into your schedule this year, you can see My Morning Jacket’s full headlining tour schedule on their site.
About The Record:
MMJ Live Vol. 3: Bonnaroo 2004 (Return to Thunderdome) is the third installment in their MMJ LIVE vinyl series. Recorded at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN on June 12, 2004, the 12-song collection will be available on all streaming services and as 2xLP 140g Coke bottle clear vinyl (with gatefold jacket and digital download card). Remembered for a setlist full of the band’s biggest hits and a boisterous crowd that wouldn’t be deterred by the pouring rain, that year’s performance is part Bonnaroo lore.
“It seems like only yesterday we were playing in the hot n sweaty rain-soaked Thunderdome down at the ol roo…but WOW it’s been nearly 20 years!” Jim James shares. “We are so excited to revisit and share this pivotal moment for the band and beautiful moment in time with the universe with you all again!”
Fans of the band already know that MMJ usually has great soundboard recordings of their live shows and if the lead single from MMJ Live Vol. 3: Bonnaroo 2004 (Return to Thunderdome), “One Big Holiday,” is any indicator, this record no exception. The record can be pre-ordered here.
