Welcome to East of 8th’s roundup of music added to our Spotify playlist! It’s a new year and time for new music. We’re looking forward to sharing a bunch of tracks with you in 2023!
TEMPLES: “GAMMA RAYS”
With “Gamma Rays,” British psychedelic rock quartet Temples shares the first taste of their forthcoming album, Exotico, which will be released on April 14th. Produced by Alto Records labelmate Sean Ono Lennon and mixed by GRAMMY Award-winner Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT), the song’s dreamy, sun-splashed tones carry the track’s conflicted lyrical imagery. “In the verse lyrics we’re talking about the grandness of nature,” says Temples’ James Bagshaw. “And then the chorus flips that on its head, it sounds like a rejoiceful summer tune about soaking up the rays, but the truth is that soaking up gamma rays will kill you. So, it’s about that juxtaposition of beauty and danger that we often find in nature.”

MANDI MAPES: “DAFFODIL FLOORS”
At the intersection of pop, indie folk, and Americana is where you’ll find Mandi Mapes. On “Daffodil Floors” from her upcoming debut album, Levees, Mapes sings about personal discovery and resolve: “It’s a kind and gentle protest song about my personal journey of coming to the end of a long religious road. Finding the courage to step off that road and begin resting in my beloved-ness,” says Mapes. The piano-led track carries a peaceful air, but Mapes’s emotive vocals hint at the more powerful underlying meaning of the song.

OLEN: “GOT A NAME”
“Got a Name,” from L.A.’s Olen, proves you can have it all in a song. Is it a raucous sing-along pop anthem? Yes. Is it a reflective track full of soul searching? Also yes. “Got A Name” is loaded with pensive bravado and presents enough sure-fire hooks to leave the listener hungry for Olen’s upcoming debut EP, SoCoDependent, which will be released in early 2023.

FRANCES LUKE ACCORD: “ALL THE THINGS”
Prepare for a bright ray of folk sunshine as Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers, the duo known as Frances Luke Accord, bring us, “All The Things.” Off of their forthcoming LP, Safe In Sound, out on February 9th via Two-Dale Records/Tone Tree Music, the track instantly draws comparison to the authentic harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel or The Milk Carton Kids. Born from the uncertainty of our times, “All The Things” explores loneliness, isolation, and the inevitability of death, but from a place of hope, empathy, and optimism.
