In October 2018, singer/songwriter Kurt Vile released his critically-acclaimed seventh album Bottle It In via Matador Records. Bottle It In heads off in new directions, pushing at the edges of the map into unexplored territory–these songs show an artist who is still evolving and growing, expressing himself through monster jams, a songwriter who, like his hero John Prine, can make you laugh and break your heart, often in the same line, as well as a vocalist who essentially rewrites those songs whenever he sings them in his wise, laconic jive talkin’ drawl. He revels in the minutiae of the music not simply incorporating new instruments but emphasizing how they interact with his guitar and voice.
Bottle It In was made over the course of over two years, between long tours and family road-trips and an album with Courtney Barnett, multiple cities/studios (Portland, LA, NYC, Philly), with multiple producers (Kurt, Peter Katis, Shawn Everett, Rob Schnapf, Rob Laakso), a myriad of new-for-Kurt instruments (synth, drum machine, glockenspiel, harp), and special guests including Kim Gordon, Lucius, Cass McCombs, and Mary Lattimore…WHEW! In a word, this album–and its creator–are phenomenal.
