“The winters are still brutal, and I haven’t gotten used to it even after five years. Every time winter rolls around I ask myself “Why?? Why did you move here?” laughs Christine Fink, frontwoman of Omaha-based alt-soul outfit High Up. “We’ve made so many good friends here though, there are a lot of opportunities and experiences afforded to us here as musicians that we couldn’t have had if we’d stayed where we were. And, my relationship with my sister is closer than ever, and I am so lucky to be able to work with her,” she adds about her bandmate, notable artist Orenda Fink. “It’s my favorite thing about being in Omaha.”

Fink recounts that experience of relocating with her husband, their dog, and their two cats from their home in the deep South to Nebraska in “Alabama To The Basement,” a track from High Up’s debut album, You Are Here, out February 23rd via Team Love. “We crashed in Orenda’s basement for a few months in Omaha until we could get on our feet, find jobs, and a place of our own,” Fink recalls. “Orenda is super allergic to cats, and that was really big of her to let us stay as long as we did,” she laughs. “It was definitely a learning experience. She and I hadn’t lived in the same town for years, probably about a decade, and it was a way for us to get really close really fast in ways we didn’t expect. It was bumpy here and there, but that’s normal when you’re in a transitional state. We were grateful to be able to get our foot in the door in Omaha,” she levels. “The song is about giving it all up in the South and leaving everything we had, the rockiness of getting though living in a basement, being new in a town, but we persevered.”

You Are Here features 11 electrifying tracks washed in vintage vibes and reverb. “We were going for that vintage, sort of crunchy sound. Honestly, I’m not very technically inclined. People start talking about pedals and I sort of zone out,” she laughs. “I know that our producer used some vintage equipment in order to facilitate that sound. The vibe and style of our music are better served when it’s less produced and not so clean. We were so happy that he was able to so successfully able to find that sound,” continues Fink. “We did the recording live, we went into the studio and played together, instead of recording individual tracks. I feel like we thrive more as a live band, our performance is the meat of what we do, so we decided to record that way as well to capture the energy and the emotion. We pull a lot of our energy from each other. It was really fun.”

Since the release of their first EP in 2017, High Up has been playing shows and festivals, creating music, and generally doing the thing.  The band has embarked on a nationwide tour, with a stop planned in Nashville to perform at The Basement on Monday, March 5th. “It kind of gets Gallagher-y up there with all the sweat and the spit,” Fink laughs. “Might want to bring a poncho.”
