El Michels Affair, the perennial purveyors of cinematic soul who have been churning out records for the likes of Lee Fields, The Arcs, The Shacks, and more, are back with Return To The 37th Chamber, the band’s highly anticipated follow up to 2009’s underground cult classic Enter the 37th Chamber. The album will be released April 14th via Big Crown Records.
Producer and bandleader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog, sometimes hitting six generations of tape before it was ready for mixing; the technique gives the Return to The 37th Chamber its own hazy hip hop sound, as EMA reinterprets and reimagines classic songs from Wu-Tang Clan, bringing members of the Big Crown Family along for the ride.
Lee Fields is joined by Shannon Wise of The Shacks for their version of “Tearz”, which pays as much homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it does to the Wu-Tang Clan, giving us a taste of what could be the most interesting album this year has to offer. Check it out:
