New York City-based Southern rock band A Valley Son is an anomaly, comprised of three Southern transplants raised on Stax and Motown, and one Yonkers-born gospel drummer-turned-bassist. After witnessing a generation of bands that seem to value aesthetics over substance, the four members vowed to make music that strips away all of the unnecessary decoration and put songwriting, emotion, and raw musicianship back at the forefront. Their debut EP Sunset Park, set for release on January 27th, does just that; A Valley Son’s Southern gothic-inspired, harmony-laden, soulful rock n’ roll invokes a Sunday service, yet is right at home in a barroom, with storytelling no less truthful and honest than the sound.
The band recently released their first single, “Lights In The Sky,” which can be heard here; we are excited about what these up-and-comers have coming up, and wanted to find out what kind of music inspires them to do what they do–they obliged and made a playlist packed full of soul, Southern rock, folk rock, and even a little hip hop, just for us, beloved readers!
