Alabama Shakes definitely blew the idea of a sophomore slump out of the proverbial water with the release of their stellar LP Sound & Color this year. While there are so many list-worthy options on this record, I found myself turning up the volume every time groove-tastic tune “Dunes” popped up on the rotation (“Future People” was a close contender too, can’t get enough of that one either).
Frontwoman and perennial sass machine Brittany Howard makes what she does seem so effortless, but the emotion she conveys, even on a recording, is monumental. Supported by a phenomenal cast which includes Zac Cockrell, Heath Fogg, Steve Johnson, and Ben Tanner, the Shakes convey their powerful brand of rootsy Southern goodness like none other.
