With the release of her debut EP, blindfaith county, Los Angeles artist Maya J’an offers a six-song collection centered on uncertainty, longing, and learning to live with the unanswered. Among its standout moments is “depends,” a vulnerable and introspective track that finds Maya turning ordinary observations into something deeply personal.
Built around warm instrumentation, folk-leaning textures, and layered harmonies, “depends” finds Maya looking inward. Rather than focusing on the people and places that often populate her songwriting, the track centers on the unpredictability of her own thoughts and emotions. Opening with the line, “Thought I’d feel more real with happy pills, didn’t feel nothin’,” the song confronts the gap between expectation and reality, setting the tone for an exploration of uncertainty and self-reflection.
That tension sits at the heart of blindfaith county. Describing the project as a place where people are waiting for closure, love, relief, safety, or even themselves, Maya uses each song to explore a different corner of that emotional landscape. “Depends” serves as one of the EP’s most direct moments, trading grand revelations for honest observations about navigating life one day at a time.
The release follows a steady rise for Maya, whose earlier singles “cul-de-sac,” “new june,” and “pocket knife” helped establish the foundation for this new creative chapter. While “cul-de-sac” reflected on the loss of pieces of her Pasadena hometown following the 2025 California fires, blindfaith county broadens the lens, inviting listeners deeper into her personal world.
Before stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist, Maya built an impressive rรฉsumรฉ as a songwriter, collaborating with artists including Pharrell, SAINt JHN, and Justine Skye. Yet blindfaith county feels less concerned with credentials than connection. On “depends,” Maya J’an offers a reminder that not every question needs an immediate answer, and that sometimes simply learning to live with uncertainty can be its own form of progress.
