Elizabeth Ziman has long approached songwriting like a way of sorting through the contradictions of everyday life. Under the name Elizabeth & The Catapult, her music often lingers in the space where optimism and uncertainty overlap, letting small observations build into something more reflective. That instinct continues with her new single “50/50.”
The song unfolds as a series of snapshots that capture how uneven the world can feel from one moment to the next. Someone celebrates a breakthrough while someone else faces loss; one person finds clarity while another is still searching for it. Instead of forcing a message, Ziman lets the contrasts speak for themselves. The song unfolds more like a conversation than a statement.
“50/50” is the first release from Responsible Friend, the upcoming Elizabeth & The Catapult album arriving April 3 via Compass Records. The record centers on care and grief. It also considers the challenge of staying present for others while still protecting your own energy. It’s a familiar balancing act in Ziman’s writing: looking closely at the emotional weight of the moment without losing sight of the connections that carry us through it.
Elizabeth & The Catapult will support Responsible Friend with a spring tour that includes a Nashville stop on April 17 at Analog, bringing Ziman’s thoughtful songwriting and understated arrangements to one of the city’s most intimate listening rooms.
