Fantastic Cat has never taken itself too seriously, and the band’s new single “Don’t Let Go” leans fully into that sensibility. The track plays like a playful rejection of modern indie rock’s obsession with emotional self-improvement.
Band member Brian Dunne explains that the song grew out of noticing how many modern indie tracks focus on therapy, healing, and self-care.
“‘Don’t Let Go’ is a song about perseverance and the stubborn act of never giving up,” Dunne says. “For a while, it felt like every new indie rock song was about finding inner peace, going to therapy, and the pleasures of a warm bath. This song intends to be the antithesis of that type of songwriting. It’s about holding onto something long after you should, no matter the cost. It does sound nice in the bath though.”
The track channels a loose, barroom strain of indie rock built around jangling guitars, layered harmonies, and a rhythm section that keeps everything moving forward. The band’s four members—Brian Dunne, Anthony D’Amato, Don DiLego, and Mike Montali of Hollis Brown—bring together four distinct songwriting voices, a dynamic that often gives Fantastic Cat’s recordings and live shows their slightly chaotic but tightly connected energy.
“Don’t Let Go” serves as the latest preview of Cat Out Of Hell, Fantastic Cat’s third album, arriving April 10 via Missing Piece Records. Produced by the band and mixed by D. James Goodwin (Goose, Kevin Morby, The Hold Steady), the record expands on the group’s mix of sharp songwriting and loose, collaborative energy.
Fantastic Cat will support the album with a spring U.S. headline tour that includes stops across the East Coast and Midwest. Nashville audiences will get their turn on April 23 when the band plays Row One, bringing the group’s harmony-heavy live show to Music City. Tickets are already on sale.
