Peter Matthew Bauer’s solo work has always moved at its own pace. Best known for his role in the formation of The Walkmen, Bauer has used his solo projects to explore songs that unfold slowly, where repetition and texture matter as much as melody. He uses these sonic themes to allow emotions to swell and an air of drama to swirl. It’s a creative core that remains consistent across his catalog and continues with his latest release, “Gold Paint for Blue Skies.”
This fall has been a busy time for Baur. “Gold Paint for Blue Skies” arrives following October’s realease of “Doom” and November’s Hyloxolos, a heavier collaborative project that leaned into the louder side of rock.

The track features Walkmen bandmate Matt Barrick on drums and drum machines, with Henri Cash of Starcrawler on bass. Bauer handles the layered keys and guitars himself. Each part enters deliberately, adding weight without overwhelming the song’s steady momentum.
Co-written with Walkmen bandmates Barrick and Paul Maroon, “Gold Paint for Blue Skies” fits naturally alongside Bauer’s recent solo work, while still having enough Walkman DNA to feel at home for the band’s fanbase. Mixed by Joey Oaxaca and mastered by Christopher Colbert, the song rewards patience, favoring atmosphere and structure over immediacy.
