The death of rock icon David Bowie has affected the world in so many ways, and many artists have been inspired to pay tribute, reflect, and share insight through their work. Toronto-based band Born Ruffians have recently unleashed “Forget Me,” their new video that stars frontperson Luke Lalonde, who wrote the song on the day Bowie died. “What really resonated with me about Bowie’s death was how beautiful it was—it wasn’t necessarily a sad thing.” Lalonde notes. “The light is something that you should embrace and feel okay going towards it.”
The video, directed by Leah Fay Goldstein and Peter Dreimanis of July Talk, is a continuation of the video for the track “Love Too Soon.” Both songs appear on their new album, Uncle, Duke & The Chief, produced by Richard Swift, out February 16th via Yep Roc Records–their first since 2013 release Birthmarks to feature the group’s original three-piece lineup of guitarist/vocalist Lalonde, bassist Mitch DeRosier and drummer Steve Hamelin. The album’s writing was greatly informed by both Bowie’s passing as well as a cancer diagnosis for Lalonde’s father.
“Forget Me,” a late-60s-early-70s-esque tune punctuated by background handclaps and Lalonde’s distinct, razor-sharp vocal-style, features our hero as he says goodbye to an unconventional friend. Give it a gander:
