AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JOSEPHINE AND THE WILDFRONT

I had the opportunity recently to sit down with Josephine Moore, Krista Glover, and Preston Vaughn, otherwise known as Murfreesboro indie rock band, and The Deli Magazine’s Nashville current Artist of the Month, Josephine and The Wildfront.  The trio met while members of another local band, Holy Coast, and became their current incarnation earlier this year.  Since joining forces as JATW, the band has been busy recording and promoting their new EP, Swallowed By The Ocean.

The EP  features five original songs and three remixes by the album’s producer, Rob Webb (a.k.a. “DJ Rob”).  Moore, who provides the vocals and plays guitar, is supported by Glover on keys and Vaughn on drums.  Her delicate voice is hauntingly ethereal, but surprisingly gritty at times.  The group cites bands such as Wye Oak, and Metric as influences; their sound is reminiscent of synth/dream pop-infused indie folk/rock (think Beach House).  My favorite selection is “Noose,” a driving anthem of synth-y goodness where Moore sings “dusty floors and cellophane/I can’t even remember my own name/spit into the bottle/tie that knot around your neck.”  The lyrics are intense, but Moore turns pain into inspiration.

I find it refreshingly different; others have apparently noticed this appealing originality, because JATW has been busy and in demand since its formation, playing at house shows, festivals and venues in Murfreesboro and Nashville.  The band will be performing at The End on August 11th at 8 p.m. and at the Demonbreun BlockBuster, sponsored by Lightning 100 and Native Magazine  on August 31st at 2 p.m.

You can join JATW at Little Shop of Records in Murfreesboro to celebrate the release of Swallowed By The Ocean on August 10th at 7:00 p.m.

(Special thanks to Nick Bastoky and Lynn Hubbard for video production)
