Self-described as โ€œaggressive elevator soul,โ€ Ginger Root’s (project of Cameron Lew) sound merges smooth synth-pop, vintage soul, and off-kilter funk into a style thatโ€™s equal parts nostalgic and inventive. Initially gaining attention through clever DIY videos and his โ€œToaster Musicโ€ cover seriesโ€”filmed entirely in the back of his Honda Elementโ€” Lew has since evolved the Ginger Root project into a full-fledged multimedia experience.

That vision came into sharp focus with 2024โ€™s SHINBANGUMI, Lewโ€™s third full-length album and first release under Ghostly International. The record draws on โ€˜70s and โ€˜80s Japanese pop aesthetics while channeling the melodic clarity of French pop and the groove-driven energy of Philly soul. Now, Ginger Root has extended the albumโ€™s world with an accompanying narrative film, which debuted on Adult Swimโ€™s Toonami and was released on limited edition VHS and on YouTube. The movie weaves together all of the music videos from SHINBANGUMI into a continuous story, enhancing the layered world-building Lew has subtly crafted across his recent releases.

Following two well-received sets at Coachellaโ€”including a collaborative onstage cover of Gorillazโ€™s โ€œOn Melancholy Hillโ€ with Japanese Breakfastโ€”Ginger Root continues to gain recognition. Lew is currently touring with Japanese Breakfast and earned two nominations at the recent Music Awards Japan, including Best International Alternative Song.

With a blend of tightly arranged grooves, analog warmth, and thoughtful storytelling, Ginger Rootโ€™s live show will fit in well with the eclectic tastes of the Bonnaroo Farm. Ginger Root will be appearing at 1:30 PM on Sunday June 15 at That Tent at the 2025 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

What is the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival?

The Bonnaroo 2025 Music and Arts Festival is poised to return to Manchester Tennessee June 12-15.  As always, the fest is set to bring a diverse array of musical talent to the venue known as The Farm. Continuing the festivalโ€™s longstanding tradition of genre-spanning lineups, Bonnaroo 2025 will be headlined by Tyler the Creator, Olivia Rodrigo, Hozier, and Luke Combs. The undercard includes names ranging from Avril Lavigne to Insane Clown Posse and from Vampire Weekend to Treaty Oak Revival.

For a few short days, Manchester becomes one of the largest cities in Tennessee as music lovers converge on The Farm.  Camping remains a hallmark of the Bonnaroo experience, creating a unique bonding experience both in the crowd and throughout the campgrounds.  It also adds convenience to the experience as music on The Farm usually starts around lunchtime and doesnโ€™t end until sunrise the next morning.
