Nashville-based singer-songwriter Davis Gestiehr, known for his brooding rock and punk textures, recently dropped his latest single, “High.” This track is a compelling exploration of anxiety and the coping mechanisms we sometimes turn to.

Davis Gestiehr’s musical journey started in his formative years, surrounded by the influence of punk legends like The Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Iggy Pop, thanks to his punk-loving parents. This early immersion has profoundly shaped his sound, leading to a unique blend of rock and punk that resonates with fans of The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Arctic Monkeys. His music combines palpable pain with poignant songwriting, creating a dark yet accessible soundscape.

“High” delves into the universal experience of feeling like life is passing by, filled with missed opportunities and the perception of wasted time. Gestiehr narrates the anxious thoughts that plague many. “I think it’s a very universal experience to feel as if you’re wasting your life away and watching as experiences and opportunities pass you by. I feel like this song portrays the idea that it’s easier to face those realities when high, rather than when sober,” explains Gestiehr.

The single stands out with its upbeat percussion and fuzzy guitars, all underpinned by Gestiehr’s distinctive vocals. The stark juxtaposition between the bright musical style and the seriousness of the lyrics amplifies the song’s message. “I’ve always been a fan of the relationship between cynical, depressing lyrics paired with an upbeat, optimistic soundscape. I grew up listening to bands like The Cure who are masters of that. To me, there has always been something so fascinating about pain being a semblance to driving drums and jangly guitars,” says the artist.
