Los Angeles indie rock outfit Common People continue their rapid rise with “Blue Eyes,” a fuzzy, emotionally charged new single released via Parallel Vision and Big Loud Rock. Produced by Cage The Elephant co-founder and guitarist Brad Shultz, the track captures the uneasy moment when infatuation gives way to reality, using distorted guitars and thick bass tones to mirror the slow unraveling of a relationship.
The song arrives amid a busy stretch for Common People, following the release of their debut EP Games and a growing list of festival appearances and national touring opportunities. While earlier singles introduced the band’s blend of garage rock grit and melodic songwriting, “Blue Eyes” further develops the sound that has helped them build momentum over the past year.
“Blue Eyes” also carries particular significance for the band. According to vocalist Nicky Winegardner, it marked the beginning of their creative partnership with Shultz:
“Blue Eyes is the song that kind of started this whole thing. It was our first time working with Brad and seeing what we could do together,” Winegardner shared. “There’s an innocence to the song that comes from where I was when I started writing it. Making sense of what love does to you and means to you feels like a shared experience of youth. It can feel good to realize that something is actually bad.”
That sense of innocence slowly fading is reflected throughout the song. The hazy production and swirling instrumentation create a dreamlike atmosphere, while the underlying tension hints at the emotional unraveling happening beneath the surface. The accompanying music video extends those themes through a visual narrative that mirrors the relationship’s emotional push and pull.
Common People have been steadily expanding their reach since forming in Los Angeles in 2022. Comprised of Winegardner, drummer Cormac Cadden, bassist Konrad Ulich, guitarist Asher Thomson, and guitarist Sam Belzer, the band first caught Shultz’s attention through early demos before signing to his Parallel Vision label in partnership with Big Loud Rock.
Since then, they have shared stages with Cage The Elephant, The Criticals, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Congress The Band, and The Bends. Their growing reputation as a live act will continue this summer with appearances at Bonnaroo’s Outeroo, Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, and Austin City Limits, along with select dates supporting Young The Giant. For Nashville fans, the next opportunity to catch Common People live comes this Friday, June 5 at rocknite’s free all-day concert takeover at JBJ’s, where the band will perform alongside Cage The Elephant and a lineup of emerging rock acts.
