Sunflower Bean wasted no time grabbing the crowd’s attention on Tuesday night at The Blue Room, delivering an electrifying set that showcased their latest album, Mortal Primetime, alongside fan favorites from across their catalog. The band’s moody, atmospheric lighting paired perfectly with the venue’s intimacy, creating a brooding setting that matched the trio’s raw emotion and high-energy performance.
From the opening notes of “Champagne Taste,” the band delivered with an electric intensity. The set leaned heavily into Mortal Primetime, with songs like “Nothing Romantic,” “There’s a Part I Can’t Get Back,” and “Look What You’ve Done to Me” shining in the live setting. These tracks felt both fresh and urgent, reminding fans of the band’s growth and resilience. At the same time, Sunflower Bean didn’t forget their longtime fans, sprinkling in older tracks like “Twentytwo” and “I Was a Fool” that celebrated their decade-long journey.
Throughout the night, Nick Kivlen’s guitar work added plenty of soaring solos, while Olive Faber’s drumming provided a strong precision that that kept the band thundering on. The highlight though had to be Julia Cumming’s vocals, as her commanding rock voice carried each song with both grit and grace.
In what seems to be an unfortunate trend in Nashville, the crowd’s energy was more reserved than expected. (This being our third consecutive Nashville rock concert where the audience seemed glued in place). Though the crowd seemingly suffered from a collective post–Memorial Day hangover, the band’s enthusiasm never faltered. And while there wasn’t a lot of movement, fans clearly enjoyed the show, as smartphones were frequently out, videoing memorable moments.
The performance was loud—in the best way possible. Each song carried a vibrant, pulsing energy that filled The Blue Room with a sense of urgency and excitement. Sunflower Bean proved why they’ve become such a beloved presence in the indie rock scene: their raw, resilient spirit—epitomized by the musical maturity of Mortal Primetime—shone through every note. This is a band that sounds good on record, but feels even better when you see them live!
