Who is Daisy the Great?

Daisy the Great, formed by Kelley Dugan and Mina Walker, started as a friendship between two NYU Tisch School of the Arts acting majors who bonded over writing music together. Their shared love for stacked harmonies and catchy melodies led them to form a band, which quickly gained momentum. After releasing their debut album I’m Not Getting Any Taller in 2019, their song “The Record Player Song” gained viral popularity on TikTok, and a collaboration with AJR went certified gold with over 450 million streams. Their sophomore album, All You Need is Time (2022), and subsequent EPs like Spectacle: Daisy the Great vs. Tony Visconti expanded their unique sound, drawing inspiration from artists like Fiona Apple, David Bowie, and Liz Phair.

Known for their tight harmonies and strong melodic sensibility, Daisy the Great’s songwriting is deeply diaristic, reflecting both the monumental and the mundane. Their latest project, The Rubber Teeth Talk, sees the band working with producer Catherine Marks in a “homegrown” process, creating lush, detailed songs about self-perception, comparison, and the messy nature of personal growth. With collaborations and tours alongside artists like Claud, Illuminati Hotties, and The Kooks, Daisy the Great has continued to carve out a distinctive space in the indie-pop world.

The Rubber Teeth Talk promises to showcase Daisy the Great’s dynamic and captivating sound across its 11 tracks. Producer Catherine Marks describes the record as a deeply personal and emotional journey, where each song’s unique sonic identity reflects the band’s storytelling.

New Single And Music Video: “Ballerina”

Ballerina,” the lead single from The Rubber Teeth Talk, explores the societal pressure to attain perfection, driven by the unattainable ideal of the ballerina. Written by Walker and Dugan, the song reflects on how social media fuels comparisons to an idealized version of beauty, success, and talent. As the band explains, “Ballerina represents a childhood dream of perfection: something that is unattainable, but real enough to give yourself something to compare yourself to.” The track’s edgy sound, marked by spiraling synths and bold lyrics like, “I wake up at 4:00 a.m. these days, I’ve got a lot on my mind / Like what’s the point of a body if I’ll never be a ballerina!” captures the internal conflict between self-doubt and aspiration.

Coming off their first headlining tour, the duo’s new material reflects a blend of introspection and playful imagination, grounding the themes of The Rubber Teeth Talk. The track is a perfect preview of the album’s exploration of dreams, desires, and the absurdities of striving for perfection.
