We originally published this preview a few months ago. Now that the South Star Music Festival is only a week away, we felt it was time for an update. Anyone with a keen eye will notice that there have been some changes on the lineup. The most noticeable one is that Jane’s Addiction has cancelled their tour and are no longer going to play at the festival. South Star has been able to get Tom Morello as a replacement. In a less dramatic change, Ludacris and Jimmy Eat World have swapped days on the schedule. The festival has also added to it’s website a map to the grounds, information about permitted and prohibited items, locker rental information, and much more.

Nothing says that summer is here quite like the start of music festival season. While each year brings us a few new fests to check out, often they are EDM focused or far enough away that traveling to them would take a serious investment. However, for 2024, we have recently been aware of a new music festival just down the road from Nashville in Huntsville, Alabama. We are excited to share with you what we know so far about the inaugural edition of the South Star Music Festival!

We don’t have to spend a lot here. If you don’t know who Gwen Stefani (Saturday, September 28) and Blink 182 (Sunday, September 29) are, you must have been living under a proverbial rock for the last two decades. So, instead of typing a lot of words about these two acts, we’ll just leave you a couple music videos to get you hyped up:
Plus, based on her setlists, we should also expect Ms. Stefani to sprinkle in a healthy dose of No Doubt content as well!
The “Undercard”
“Undercard” is in quotes this time because South Star has skipped the traditional small-act undercard and went with a poster full of bands you know. As mentioned above, Jane’s Addiction has unfortunately canceled their tour and will no linger appear at South Star. The festival moved quickly and replaced them with Tom Morello. We also need to give a shout out to Beck being on this lineup. We’ve seen him perform several times and he never disappoints.
Ludacris will be a massive sing-along. Venessa Carlton is going to wow the South Star crowd with her vocals. Winona Fighter on Saturday and Bully on Sunday are will get us so hyped up with their hard-hitting rock music that we won’t even need a Red Bull to power through two extremely full days of music!
What Else Will Happen At The Festival:
The festival is obviously aware that they scheduled an event in the fall in SEC country. Football is going to be on everyone’s mind. The fest has promised us the South Star Sports Hall for those that don’t want to be too separated from their favorite school’s game. While some might balk at adding what appears to be a sports bar into a music festival, we can say from personal experience it can be a welcome addition. We attended a festival last year with a sports bar available and it made for a great place to meet up and reset between acts.
When And Where Is The South Star Music Festival?
The South Star Music Festival is September 28 and 29 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama. For our Nashville folks, that’s about a two hour drive. (2.5 hours if you stop at the Buc-ee’s on I-65 near Huntsville for some beef jerky.)

Tickets for the festival are already on sale and you can get more information on the South Star Music Festival’s website here. Like most festivals, options range from General Admission which gets you into the festival to enjoy the shows, to Platinum which includes food, beverage, air conditioned lounges, free lockers, and premium viewing options. Children under 8 years of age are free when accompanied by a ticked adult.
South Star is not a camping festival, but Huntsville has plenty of hotels to accommodate us festival travelers.
